AI VIDEO EDITING COST
7 primary sources

How much does AI video editing cost for one 5-minute video?

For one 5-minute talking-head video, direct AI software can be about $11 of monthly plan capacity in a transparent example: $5 of a Claude Pro plan allocated across four videos, plus $5.76 for four 5-second Runway Gen-4.5 clips. Starting from zero would still mean $35 in monthly cash outlay, before your review time.

Price your own workflow by tracking subscription allocation, credits used, and human review minutes—then compare the fully loaded total with an editor’s quote.

01 · START WITH THREE NUMBERS

What does AI video editing cost for one 5-minute video?

There is no honest universal price per finished minute. AI editing products charge with monthly plans, uploaded media hours, generation credits, exports, or some combination of them. The useful answer is three numbers, not one.

NumberWhat it meansConstructed 5-minute example
Monthly cash outlayWhat leaves your account this month$35 for Claude Pro plus Runway Standard
Plan capacity usedThe share of subscriptions consumed by this edit$10.76, rounded to about $11
Fully loaded costCapacity plus your review time and outside spend$10.76 + review hours × your hourly value

The official inputs, in US dollars with monthly billing, are a $20 Claude Pro plan and a $15 monthly Runway Standard plan with 625 credits. Runway lists 60 credits for five seconds of Gen-4.5, so four clips use 240 credits: 240 ÷ 625 × $15 = $5.76. Allocating the Claude plan across four videos adds $5. This assumes the Claude work stays within the plan limits, with no paid extra usage. Runway Standard credits reset each billing month and do not roll over; unused capacity does not reduce the bill.

02 · FIND THE METERED WORK

Which AI editing steps cost the most?

Transcription, silence removal, rough cuts, captions, and basic audio cleanup are often included in a subscription or can run locally. Generated B-roll, avatars, voice, lip sync, and repeated generations are more likely to consume credits every time you try again. That makes the most expensive step the one with both a meter and a high retry rate.

Editing stepCommon meterWhat makes it grow
Transcription and rough cutUploaded media hours or local computeLong source files and repeated imports
Captions and cleanupPlan feature, media hours, or AI creditsSpeaker changes, poor audio, and manual corrections
Generated B-rollCredits per second, model, or resolutionMore shots, longer clips, higher quality, and retries
Review and revisionsYour time, plus any new generationWeak direction, missed cuts, and late creative changes

Whisper is MIT-licensed and runs locally, while FFmpeg is free software used for media processing. That can remove a SaaS usage charge from transcription and assembly, but it does not make compute, setup, troubleshooting, or review time free.

In one first-person workflow, creator Sandy Lee used Claude, Whisper, FFmpeg, and generated B-roll. Her report makes the billing boundary visible: she asks creative questions before generating B-roll so fewer paid attempts are wasted. Treat that as one creator's workflow, not a benchmark for your channel.

03 · NORMALIZE THE BILLING UNIT

How do credits turn into a per-video budget?

Never compare “400 AI credits” in one product with “400 credits” in another. Descript, for example, lists media hours and AI credits separately, while Runway publishes generation rates by model and seconds. Each product defines its own unit.

Descript: media hours and AI credits by planRunway: plans, monthly credits, and generation rates

PER-VIDEO COST FORMULAUse the price and unit from the same plan
subscription allocation
+ credits used ÷ plan credits × plan price
+ paid assets and export fees
+ review hours × your hourly value
+ outside editing labor
= fully loaded cost for this video

If the subscription is useful for work beyond this video, allocate it consistently: by videos per month, tracked usage, or another rule you can repeat. Keep the full monthly charge next to the allocation so a small per-video number never hides the cash commitment.

04 · USE A BREAK-EVEN RULE

When is a human editor cheaper?

A human editor is cheaper when the quote is below your fully loaded AI cost for the same scope and quality bar. Compare the same deliverables, revision count, turnaround, captions, graphics, B-roll, and file handoff—not a finished quote with a bare software subscription.

Upwork currently gives a $6–$25 hourly headline range, while its experience tiers run from below $30 to $61–$150 per hour. These different marketplace summaries are not a guaranteed price for a five-minute edit. Ask for a scoped quote and compare it with your measured total.

Upwork: video editor cost guide

  1. 01

    Keep the AI workflow

Use it when the format repeats, your review time is low, and the same subscriptions serve several videos.

  2. 02

    Compare two scoped quotes

Do this when your measured total is close to the quoted price or failed generations make the next edit uncertain.

  3. 03

    Hire for the difficult layer

A hybrid handoff can be cheaper when story judgment, pacing, brand graphics, or a deadline creates most of the rework while transcription and assembly stay automated.

05 · ORIGINAL WORKSHEET

Use the 5-minute AI editing cost worksheet

Fill this after one complete edit, not before. Log actual usage from the billing page and actual review time from a timer. If a line is already included in another line, enter zero instead of counting it twice.

06 · FAQ

Common questions about AI video editing cost

Can AI edit a five-minute video for free?

Sometimes the direct software charge can be zero with local tools or a free tier. The workflow still uses your hardware, setup time, review time, and possibly generation credits. Record those before calling the finished video free.

Why does AI B-roll change the price so quickly?

Generative video is commonly metered by model, seconds, or credits. A rejected five-second clip can cost the same capacity as a usable one, so shot count and retry rate matter more than the final video length alone.

Can I compare AI editors by price per minute?

Only after normalizing what “minute” means. One plan may count uploaded source media, another generated seconds, and another finished exports. Convert each plan with its own published unit, then compare the same workflow.
