TikTok Features Explained: What to Use and When

TikTok has too many controls to learn as one list. Start with the job: use Video for motion or a spoken demonstration, Photo for a swipeable sequence, and Text for a short written update. 02 · POST FORMAT

Video, photo, or text: choose the right post format

TikTok documents three basic post types: video, photo, and text. The format is packaging, not a reach promise. Choose the one that carries the evidence with the least friction.

Use a video post when movement, timing, voice, or a reveal is part of the answer: a recipe technique, a product demonstration, a story, or a before-and-after with a visible transition. The viewer should gain something from watching the sequence rather than reading still frames.

Use a photo post when people benefit from controlling the pace: a checklist, outfit options, a step-by-step breakdown, reference images, or several details they may want to revisit. Each image should still make sense as one beat in the sequence.

Use a text post when the complete value is a concise thought, question, update, or prompt. If the claim needs visual proof, text is the setup rather than the finished format.

AI Cover Title is still rolling out: a September 2026 creator walkthrough shows that some creators can find the option after Add post > Photo > choose one static photo (Live Photos do not work) > add text. It appears either above the keyboard or under the starred stylized A icon, where creators can select a TikTok-suggested title.

03 · IN-APP EDITING

Edit inside TikTok when speed matters

TikTok's editor is useful when the post is simple enough to finish in one publishing flow. TikTok documents clip, sound, image, text, effect, sticker, and cover controls. Use them to clarify the idea; adding every available layer usually makes a short post harder to follow.

Trim around the answer. Remove the wait before the first useful moment and any pause after the payoff.
Use on-screen text as a map. Name the promise, step, comparison, or result instead of duplicating every spoken sentence.
Generate captions, then proofread them. TikTok says creators can edit auto-generated captions; names, numbers, and specialist terms still need a human check.
Select a useful cover. TikTok describes the cover as the preview shown in places such as a profile or search results, so choose a frame that identifies the post.

Use an external editor when the project needs precise multicamera, audio, accessibility, or brand-asset control that the current in-app flow does not give you.

04 · RESPONSE FORMATS

Duet or Stitch: choose how much context you need

Both formats build on another TikTok, but they preserve context differently. Use Duet when your post and the source should play side by side at the same time: a reaction, comparison, harmony, demonstration, or visual answer. In the app, start from the source post's Share menu and choose Duet.

Use Stitch when one selected segment is enough context and your recording should then take over: quote a claim, answer a question, correct one step, or continue a story. Start from Share, choose Stitch, and select the segment before recording your response.

05 · STAGING OR PUBLISHING

Draft or Story: private staging versus a 24-hour update

A Draft is private staging. Record and edit the post, then save it from the Post screen when you need to finish, review, or publish later. TikTok says drafts are visible only to you until posted.

Do not use Drafts as your only backup or as a team handoff. TikTok warns that drafts may be removed after the app is uninstalled and reinstalled or after an account is moved or switched to another device. Drafts also cannot be transferred between accounts. Keep important source media somewhere durable.

A Story is a published photo, video, or text update that TikTok says remains viewable for 24 hours. Use it for a same-day update, event context, quick prompt, or behind-the-scenes moment. Use a regular post when the tutorial, reference, or proof should stay available beyond that window.

06 · BEFORE AND AFTER PUBLISHING

Use Creator Search Insights before filming, TikTok Studio after publishing

Creator Search Insights is a planning tool.TikTok says it surfaces topics people search for and lets creators explore categories, personalized topics, and content-gap signals. Use it before filming to learn the language people use and to find a question you can answer with real specificity.

A content-gap label is a lead, not a forecast. It does not prove that your version will be useful, that competition is weak for your audience, or that a post will receive distribution. TikTok introduced the tool in select regions, so confirm access before building it into a team process.

TikTok Studio is the operating layer. TikTok describes it as a place to create, edit, upload, manage, and analyze content. Use it after publishing to review your own metrics, manage posts and comments, and decide what to repeat. The in-app, web, and standalone experiences do not necessarily expose the same tools, and some features depend on region or eligibility.

07 · REAL-TIME FORMAT

Use LIVE only when the value is real-time interaction

Choose LIVE when the audience changes what happens next: a Q&A, interview, co-hosted conversation, live demonstration, critique, or event. If the viewer would get a clearer answer from a short edited post, the value is not truly live.

TikTok says creators must be at least 18 to go LIVE and lists 1,000 followers as a requirement that may vary by region. LIVE and Gift features are not available everywhere. Check the LIVE tab and current Help page before announcing a session; do not build the plan around a threshold copied from another market.

Why TikTok features differ between accounts

A TikTok feature can be stable without appearing identically for every person. Region, age, account type, eligibility, app version, web versus mobile, source-post permissions, and staged rollout can all change the visible controls.

Find the exact label in your own updated app
Match the name and icon before following a tutorial. A similar label may belong to an effect, template, account setting, or a different publishing surface.

Check the account and content boundary
Confirm region, age, account type, eligibility, and—for Duet or Stitch—the source post's reuse permission.

Run one low-stakes test
Verify the complete creation and publishing path before a campaign, client workflow, or large batch depends on it.

Keep a stable fallback
A standard video, photo, or text post should still carry the idea if an experimental control disappears or moves.

One current example shows why the date matters. On September 3, 2026, TikTok said Comment Polls and Live Photo Comments were globally available, while Voice Comments for accounts 18 and older and Photo Carousel Comments would roll out globally over the following month. Check for the microphone, poll, or photo control before promising that interaction format to an audience.
