How to Find the Videos That Actually Gained Followers
Start with follower or subscriber gains, not views. In YouTube Studio, open Analytics, choose Advanced Mode, set the Videos dimension, and compare subscriber change for the same date range. Instagram's verified desktop Insights does not currently offer a Follows sort, and TikTok's public help does not document per-post follower attribution. For those platforms, use any per-post follow metric your account exposes; otherwise record account-level net growth by test window and label the result directional, not causal. Then compare follows per 1,000 views.
01 · TWO DIFFERENT WINS
Views and follower growth answer different questions
Your most-viewed video won the reach contest. It did not necessarily win the audience-building contest. A broad joke, surprise clip, or trend can travel far without giving viewers a reason to want the next post. A smaller tutorial, series opener, or sharply defined point of view can attract fewer viewers but convert more of the right ones into followers.
Keep three leaderboards instead of one: total views, total followers or subscribers gained, and followers gained per 1,000 views. The first shows distribution. The second shows absolute audience growth. The third shows conversion efficiency inside a comparable set of videos.
| Metric | Question it answers | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Which video received the most distribution? | That viewers wanted more from the account |
| Followers gained | Which video added the most audience in total? | That it converted efficiently for its reach |
| Follows per 1,000 views | Which video converted a larger share of its reach? | Why viewers followed or what caused the result |
Keep the intent split clean. Use Kabo’s guide to observable patterns in viral videos when you want to study the creative opening. Use this guide when you want to identify which published videos actually added audience.
02 · ONE COMPARABLE TABLE
Build one follower-driver audit table
Pick one platform and one reporting window. Compare every video at the same age, such as its first seven complete days, or use the same calendar range for all rows. Do not mix a lifetime total for one video with a 28-day total for another.
Record whether the follower number is shown directly for the video. If it is not, label the row directional or unavailable. That confidence column prevents an account-level follower bump from quietly becoming a false per-video claim.
| Video | Views | Followers gained | Follows per 1,000 views | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A: broad trend | 120,000 | 240 | 2 | Reach winner |
| B: beginner tutorial | 46,000 | 368 | 8 | Raw follower winner |
| C: series opener | 18,000 | 198 | 11 | Conversion winner |
The rate is a simple constructed comparison: followers gained ÷ views × 1,000. It is not an official platform metric and has no universal good or bad threshold. Use it only within the same platform, with the same view definition and reporting window.
Platform: ______________________________________________ Date window: ____________________________________________ Use one window and one metric definition for every row. Video / URL: ____________________________________________ Views at checkpoint: ____________________________________ Followers or subscribers gained: ________________________ Metric shown directly for this video? [yes / no] Follows per 1,000 views: gained ÷ views × 1,000 = ________ Attribution confidence: [direct / directional / unavailable] Content promise: ________________________________________ Next decision: [repeat / repackage / stop / gather more data] Repeat for each video, then rank: 1. Most followers gained: _______________________________ 2. Highest follows per 1,000 views: _____________________ 3. Most views: __________________________________________

How do you find subscriber-driving videos on YouTube?
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Analytics.
- Open Advanced Mode or See More.
- Choose Videos as the dimension and set your date range.
- Add the subscriber metric your Studio exposes, then sort it from highest to lowest. If gained and lost are separate, keep both so a positive net total does not hide churn.
YouTube’s official Advanced Mode guidance supports comparing videos and groups by subscriber gain. Product labels can differ during the 2026 Studio rollout, so follow the current subscriber label in your account instead of relying on a memorized button name.

The YouTube Analytics API adds an important boundary. When the report uses the video dimension, subscribers gained and lost are limited to subscription activity attributable to that video’s watch page. That makes the metric useful, but it is not a full explanation of every channel subscription or why a viewer subscribed.
04 · ROLLOUT-SENSITIVE METRICS
How do you check follower gains on Instagram?
First check the metric your own account exposes. Open a post or Reel, choose View insights, and look for a field explicitly labeled Follows or follower growth. If it appears, record that value manually for each video in the same date window. Do not substitute profile visits, reach, or accounts engaged. Those are different actions.
In a desktop Professional Dashboard checked on September 16, 2026, Content Insights offered sorting by Accounts engaged, Interactions, Shares, Viewers, and Views. It did not offer a Follows sort, and the visible range presets stopped at 90 days. That observation applies to the verified account and surface, not every account, app version, or rollout.

05 · DIRECTIONAL EVIDENCE
How should you handle TikTok’s attribution gap?
TikTok’s public help pages say Studio includes Overview, Content, Viewers, Followers, and analytics for individual posts. They do not mention a way to sort posts by followers gained, so start by checking what your own account shows.

If your post insights show followers gained, treat that direct field like the Instagram workflow above. If they do not, use a directional test: record the account follower total immediately before publishing, keep the test window clear of other planned posts when practical, and record the net change at a fixed checkpoint. Mark the result low confidence. Search, profile visits, older videos, shares, or outside mentions may have contributed to the same change.
06 · THREE LEADERBOARDS
Rank reach winners and conversion winners separately
Sort once by views, once by followers gained, and once by follows per 1,000 views. In the constructed table, Video A is the reach winner, Video B adds the most followers, and Video C converts the highest share of its audience. Calling all three “best” would erase the decision each metric can support.
Keep rankings inside a platform. YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok define views and attribution differently, expose different reporting windows, and may validate metrics on different schedules. A rate of 8 on one platform is not automatically better than 6 on another.
Match the checkpoint before interpreting the gap. If two uploads were measured at different ages or under different definitions, use the workflow for comparing the same video under different distribution conditions before ranking them.
07 · THE NEXT CONTENT TEST
What should you repeat from a follower-driving video?
Repeat the promise and audience fit before copying the surface treatment. Write down what the video told viewers they would get from following: a continuing series, a reliable type of lesson, access to a specific point of view, or progress toward a named outcome. Then test that promise in a new video.
| Relative result in your account | What to inspect | Next test |
|---|---|---|
| High reach, high follower rate | The topic, promise, format, and follow reason | Build the closest honest sequel |
| High reach, low follower rate | Whether the video stands alone or attracts a broad mismatch | Add a clearer reason to expect the next post |
| Low reach, high follower rate | Whether the promise is strong but the opening is too narrow | Keep the promise and test a clearer entry point |
| Low reach, low follower rate | Whether the topic and account promise are both unclear | Change one major premise before repeating the format |
“High” and “low” here mean relative to your own comparable videos, not an industry benchmark. Run one meaningful change at a time, keep the checkpoint fixed, and let the next result strengthen or weaken your hypothesis.
08 · COMMON QUESTIONS
Common questions about videos that gain followers
Can a low-view video be my best follower driver?
Yes. It can have the highest follows per 1,000 views even if another video adds more followers in total. Keep both raw gains and efficiency so you do not confuse scale with fit.
Should I delete viral videos that gained few followers?
No. Low follower conversion does not make a reach winner useless. It may still create awareness, search discovery, shares, or revenue. Use the metric that matches the video’s job before deciding what to keep.
What if a video shows zero followers gained?
Confirm that the reporting window is complete and that the platform attributes follows at the video level. If both are true, inspect whether the video gives viewers a reason to expect related value from the account.
Can I compare follower conversion across platforms?
Not as a clean leaderboard. Platforms count views and attribute follows differently. Compare videos within each platform first, then compare the creative promises qualitatively.
Does a follower spike prove which video caused it?
Only a direct per-video attribution field supports that narrow claim, and even then it records an attributed action, not the viewer’s full reason. A shared time window is directional evidence, not causal proof.
