The 6 best Instagram competitor analysis tools
Rival IQ — Benchmarks and alerts
Rival IQ organizes tracked companies into competitive landscapes, with content analysis, alerts and scheduled reports. It suits a team asking what changed across a stable set of brands, rather than inspecting occasional handles.
Drive includes ten companies, six months of history and one user. History can build over time: confirm what exists for your accounts before planning a retrospective report. A solo creator researching one account may not need this monitoring setup.
Plans and access: Drive: US$239 month to month or US$199/month with annual billing; 14-day trial, no card.
Metricool — Research alongside publishing
Metricool keeps competitor monitoring alongside analytics and publishing. Choose it when reviewing references is part of running a weekly content calendar.
Its Instagram setup guide requires your own Instagram connection through Facebook; competitor targets must be professional accounts. The Free demo allows five accounts per network that cannot be edited or deleted. Paid plans make competitor management more flexible, so pick carefully before using the free slots.
Plans and access: Free: one brand and 30 days of analytics. The euro annual-billing view lists Starter from €16/month for up to five brands, with PDF/PPT reports.
Not Just Analytics — Quick profile checks
NJA offers a quick public-handle check before you invest in monitoring. Our Preppy Kitchen lookup showed account totals and a recent-content table with dates, formats, likes and comments, without an owner-account connection.
The twelve entries included older posts and deeper analysis was gated, so the table was not a complete monthly report. It is useful for choosing posts to open; an Instagram account audit is another focused first step.
Plans and access: Public lookup available in our October 19 check. Light: €190/year + VAT, three smart analyses/month. Standard: €390/year + VAT, with automatic reports and Reel/caption analysis.
Kabo — Research, ideas and writing
Kabo’s AI Agent lets you ask what an account emphasizes, request supporting posts and refine a content direction in the same conversation. It supports account and video research, then continues into ideas and writing.
Use competitor analysis for a question you want to explore and creator research to inspect the references behind it. Check which posts and evidence were available. For scheduled benchmark charts or standardized client exports, compare the monitoring tools above.
Plans and access: Free daily credits, with a Kabo login. Public research needs no owner connection and does not grant private dashboard access.
Compare the same question
Choose relevant accounts. Build a small set of Instagram references with similar topics, language and audience needs. Separate direct competitors from larger creators you study for ideas.
Match posts and periods. Keep Reels separate from images and carousels. Check whether a report covers a date range or just the latest available posts, and allow for post age. Use the same interactions and denominator when comparing an Instagram engagement rate.
Turn competitor examples into a content decision
In a small caption-level comparison, Preppy Kitchen’s Rocky Road Brownies and Chewy Sugar Cookies directed readers to book-exclusive recipes. Sally’s Baking’s Pumpkin Oatmeal Cream Pies and Burnt Sugar Caramel Cake offered website recipes through a comment-SEND prompt. Those calls to action invite different responses; comment totals alone cannot establish which works better.
Keeping those sources in the same conversation, we asked Kabo for original directions a solo beginner baker could film. It proposed three concepts, chose a banana-muffin checkpoint video, and wrote a 25-second shot sequence with screen text, voiceover and a caption.
The value was carrying references into editable content planning. These were caption observations and proposed shots, not a visual reconstruction or proven recipe. Before filming, test the recipe and make sure the promised next step is available; a comment keyword does not deliver it automatically.

Public metrics have a boundary
Public research does not unlock private saves, retention, demographics or sales. Socialinsider also labels competitor reach and views as estimates; do not present them as the owner’s Insights.
Account tracking is different from web-wide social listening. For a question about one video, use a Reel analysis workflow and inspect the evidence available for that post.
Instagram competitor analysis tools FAQ
Can I analyze an Instagram competitor without connecting my account?
Our NJA lookup and Kabo conversation did not require an Instagram owner connection. Metricool’s competitor feature requires your account to connect through Facebook. Check each product’s setup requirements.
Which Instagram competitor analysis tools have a free option?
Kabo has daily free credits; NJA’s public lookup was available in our check. Metricool offers a limited Free competitor demo. Socialinsider, Rival IQ and Sprout offer time-limited trials for their full products.
What should I check before buying a tool for client reports?
Check tracked accounts, replacement rules, seats, available history, estimates and the required export or scheduling features. Price the plan against your actual client set.
How we checked
Reviewed October 22, 2026, using official sources and saved browser results from October 19 and 22. Examples cover Socialinsider’s existing trial, NJA’s lookup and Kabo conversations; other features use documentation. The Kabo case uses four usable records from a larger request, without frame review. Original records are retained; no new trials, purchases, account connections or growth tests were run.
Socialinsider — Recurring content reports
Socialinsider fits a monthly review of the same competitor set. Its content and Reels views let you move from account totals to original posts. Our Preppy Kitchen report grouped ten Reels with dates, captions, likes and comments, making it easy to shortlist examples.
Profile allowances, replacements and historical coverage matter if your reference set changes often. Competitor reach and views include estimates, so use the report to identify posts worth inspecting rather than infer private performance.
Plans and access: Adapt: US$99/month or US$990/year; 20 profiles, three months of history and one seat. A 14-day trial requires no card; the free checker is separate.
