What counts toward 4,000 YouTube watch hours?
See which public videos and live streams count toward YouTube's 4,000-hour YPP threshold, what does not count, and what changes in February 2027.
Public long-form watch time is the core of the 4,000-hour route.
YouTube counts qualified watch hours from public long-form videos. Private, unlisted, deleted, ad-campaign, and Shorts Feed watch time do not count. Public livestreams can count when they remain public and are converted to video on demand. Reaching the number starts a channel review; it does not guarantee acceptance into YPP.
01 · WHAT COUNTS
Use the number in YouTube Studio—not a total from ordinary Analytics
The monetization route uses qualified public watch hoursin the relevant window. In practice, that means viewing time on public long-form uploads. YouTube's official eligibility page is the source of truth for the total and the rolling window. It is narrower than “all watch time my channel received.”
YouTube Help: YPP overview and eligibility
| Channel activity | 4,000-hour route | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Public long-form videos | Counts | The hours must be qualified and inside the current eligibility window. |
| Public livestreams | Can count | They must remain public and be converted to video on demand. |
| Public podcasts uploaded as long-form video | Can count | The public long-form viewing is what matters, not the podcast label. |
02 · WHAT DOES NOT COUNT
Visibility, format, and acquisition method can exclude the hours
YouTube explicitly excludes watch time from private, unlisted, and deleted videos, as well as views from advertising campaigns. It also excludes watch time produced inside the Shorts Feed from the long-form watch-hour route.
- Private videos: their watch time is not part of the public-hours total.
- Unlisted videos: sharing a link does not make their hours public YPP hours.
- Deleted videos: deleting the upload removes those hours from eligibility.
- Ad campaigns: paid promotion does not manufacture qualified watch hours.
- Shorts Feed watch time: Shorts use a separate qualified-views route.
- Some livestreams: unlisted, deleted, or never converted-to-VOD streams do not count.
03 · SHORTS AND LIVESTREAMS
Shorts have their own route; livestreams depend on what happens after the stream
Shorts Feed hours do not join the 4,000
YouTube measures Shorts eligibility in qualified Shorts views over 90 days. A viewer spending time in the Shorts Feed does not add that time to the long-form hours target.
A public live archive can contribute
Keep the stream public and allow it to become a video on demand. If it is unlisted, deleted, or never converted, the hours are excluded from the route.
Studio settles edge cases
Public view counts do not expose qualified-hour treatment. If an upload's status changed, watch the Earn total rather than estimating from views and duration alone.
04 · THREE DIFFERENT THRESHOLDS
3,000, 4,000, and 8,000 hours do not unlock the same thing
The 3,000-hour line is an earlier-access tier in eligible countries. The 4,000-hour line is the current ads and YouTube Premium entry route through January 31, 2027. For new applicants, that full-revenue threshold changes to 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days on February 1, 2027.
If you are working toward the current entry window, use the YouTube Watch Hours Deadline Calculator to project when you could reach 4,000 hours and how much ground remains before January 31, 2027.
| Threshold | What it is for | Other headline conditions |
|---|---|---|
| 3,000 hours / 12 months | Earlier access to fan funding and select Shopping features in eligible regions | 500 subscribers and 3 valid public uploads in 90 days |
| 4,000 hours / 12 months | Current ads and Premium entry route through January 31, 2027 | 1,000 subscribers in both cases; alternatively, meet 10 million qualified public Shorts views in 90 days instead of 4,000 watch hours |
| 8,000 hours / 365 days | New ads and Premium applicants from February 1, 2027 | 1,000 subscribers in both cases; alternatively, meet 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days instead of 8,000 watch hours |
