YouTube Shorts monetization in 2027: how the 10M revenue test works
Starting February 1, 2027, a creator already earning from Shorts needs 10 million qualified Shorts views in the applicable 90-day window to receive Shorts Feed ad and YouTube Premium revenue for a calendar month. YouTube checks the 90-day period ending on the 15th day of the previous calendar month. Missing the line does not remove the channel from YPP or automatically stop qualifying long-form revenue. Shorts revenue can resume after a later qualifying check.
10M is a monthly Shorts revenue test.
It is not the 20M application threshold and it is not the 1M YPP activity route. Use the qualified total YouTube applies at the monthly checkpoint, not a public channel counter.
01 · THE NEW REVENUE LINE
What changes for Shorts monetization in 2027?
From February 1, 2027, creators earning from Shorts need at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the applicable 90-day window to receive Shorts Feed ad and YouTube Premium revenue for a calendar month. This applies to the Shorts revenue surface. It does not turn 10M into a new test for every kind of YPP income.

YouTube's update creates separate questions that search results often compress into one headline. A creator can be in YPP, satisfy the channel activity rule, earn from long-form videos, and still miss the Shorts revenue threshold for a particular month.
02 · THE MONTHLY CHECKPOINT
When does YouTube check the 10M Shorts rule?
The official Shorts monetization policy is more precise than a generic “rolling 90 days” summary. For each calendar month, YouTube uses the 90-day period that ends on the 15th day of the preceding calendar month. That makes the revenue decision a monthly checkpoint based on a rolling input.
YouTube Help: Shorts monetization policies
For example, the checkpoint for April 2027 revenue uses the applicable 90-day period ending March 15, 2027. If YouTube's qualified total for that window is 10M or more, the creator clears the Shorts view requirement for April. If the total is below 10M, the creator does not clear that month's Shorts revenue requirement.
| Step | Example | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Earnings month | April 2027 | The month whose Shorts revenue eligibility is tested |
| Window endpoint | March 15, 2027 | The 15th day of the previous calendar month |
| Qualified total | Use a qualified total only if YouTube shows it for the channel | Do not substitute public views or lifetime views |
| Decision | At least 10M passes; below 10M does not | The result applies to the named earnings month |
03 · FOUR SEPARATE TESTS
10M vs. 20M vs. 1M: which Shorts number applies?
Start with the decision you are trying to make. The same 90-day unit appears in multiple rules, but the audience, purpose, and consequence are different.
| Rule | Who and why | Window | What passing means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10M qualified Shorts views | A monetizing creator's recurring Shorts Feed ad and YouTube Premium revenue test | 90 days ending on the prior month's 15th | Clears the Shorts view requirement for that month |
| 20M qualified Shorts views plus 1,000 subscribers | A new applicant's Shorts route to ad and YouTube Premium revenue from February 2027 | 90 days | Qualifies the channel to apply; it does not guarantee approval |
| 1M qualified Shorts views | One route for an existing YPP channel to satisfy the separate activity requirement | 90 days | Satisfies one activity route; it does not clear the 10M Shorts revenue test |
| 8,000 qualified public watch hours plus 1,000 subscribers | A new applicant's long-form route to ad and YouTube Premium revenue from February 2027 | 365 days | Provides an application route that does not depend on reaching 20M Shorts views |

If the long-form route is relevant, check which hours qualify in Kabo's guide to YouTube public watch hours. The 2027 entry target changes, but the separation between public long-form watch hours and Shorts Feed views still matters.
04 · THE PRIVATE INPUT
Which Shorts views count toward the 10M?
Use the qualified total or eligibility status YouTube applies to the rule. A public Shorts view, an Engaged view, a qualified view, and a view eligible for revenue allocation answer different questions. YouTube does not say that a creator can reconstruct the 10M qualified total by adding public counters.

Separately, YouTube's Shorts revenue-sharing policy excludes certain engaged views from payment calculations, including ineligible non-original activity, artificial or fake views, and views on content that does not meet advertiser-friendly guidelines. That allocation rule is another reason not to treat a public total as an earnings figure.
For the full metric boundary, see Kabo's guide to YouTube views, Engaged views, and qualified views. A public-data checker can inspect visible channel signals, but it cannot verify this private Shorts revenue total.
05 · IF YOU MISS THE LINE
What happens if you fall below 10M qualified views?
YouTube says a creator below the threshold remains in YPP and can continue earning from long-form videos. The creator becomes eligible for Shorts revenue again automatically after meeting the 10M requirement at a later monthly check.

- Shorts revenue: the affected month does not clear the published 10M view requirement.
- YPP membership: missing this Shorts line alone does not remove the channel from YPP.
- Long-form revenue: qualifying Watch Page and Premium revenue can continue under its own rules.
- Return path: Shorts revenue can resume automatically after a later qualifying monthly check.
06 · MONTHLY CONTROL SHEET
Build a Shorts revenue checkpoint worksheet
Record one row for each earnings month. If YouTube shows a qualified total for your channel, use that number to calculate the gap. Otherwise, record the eligibility status and leave the numerical gap blank. You can export Analytics for planning, but do not substitute public or engaged views for the qualified total used by the rule.

EARNINGS MONTH: ____________________ OFFICIAL CHECKPOINT: 15th of the previous calendar month QUALIFIED SHORTS VIEWS USED BY YOUTUBE, IF SHOWN: __________ GAP TO 10,000,000: max(0, 10,000,000 - qualified views) = __________ VIEWS EXPECTED TO LEAVE BEFORE THE NEXT CHECKPOINT: __________ BASELINE NEXT-CYCLE TARGET: gap + views leaving = __________ YOUTUBE STATUS OR DATED RECORD SAVED AT: ____________________ NEXT ACTION AND OWNER: ____________________
| Input | Example | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Qualified checkpoint total | 8.6M | Constructed YouTube-reported input for this example |
| Current gap | 1.4M | 10M minus 8.6M |
| Views aging out before next check | 1.7M | Constructed planning estimate from dated records |
| Baseline next-cycle target | 3.1M | 1.4M gap plus 1.7M aging out |
The 3.1M result is a transparent arithmetic baseline. It does not predict distribution, validate view quality, or account for later corrections. Before every checkpoint, refresh the worksheet from any channel-specific status or qualified total YouTube shows.
07 · THRESHOLD IS NOT PAYOUT
Does reaching 10M predict how much Shorts will pay?
No. The threshold decides whether the creator clears one revenue requirement. It does not set a fixed Shorts RPM or a payout for 10M views. Shorts Feed ad revenue is pooled and allocated under the Shorts terms, and a creator keeps 45% of the revenue allocated to them.
YouTube Help: Shorts monetization policies
YouTube's own hypothetical shows why the 10M threshold is not a payout schedule. It first builds a country-level Creator Pool after music licensing, allocates that pool by each creator's share of eligible engaged views, and only then applies the 45% creator share. The threshold answers whether Shorts revenue is available for the month. It does not set the pool size or the creator's allocation.
08 · FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do I need 10M Shorts views every calendar month?
YouTube applies the 10M requirement for each earnings month using the qualified 90-day period ending on the previous month's 15th. It is a recurring monthly decision, not a one-time lifetime unlock.
Does falling below 10M remove me from YPP?
No. YouTube says creators remain in YPP and may keep earning from long-form videos. The separate channel activity and policy rules still apply.
Is the 20M rule for creators already in YPP?
The 20M Shorts threshold is the 2027 application route for new creators seeking ad and YouTube Premium revenue. The recurring Shorts revenue line for monetizing creators is 10M qualified views.
Can I use my public Shorts view count?
Not as proof. Public views do not establish the private qualified total YouTube applies to the rule. Use a channel-specific figure or status only if YouTube shows it; otherwise, do not replace it with a public counter.
Will Shorts revenue return automatically?
YouTube says eligibility resumes automatically after the creator meets the view requirement at a later check, as long as the channel satisfies the other applicable rules.
