YouTube’s 2027 monetization deadline: when 4,000 hours still count

Reaching 4,000 qualified watch hours before February 1, 2027 does not by itself lock in YouTube's old monetization threshold. The clearly protected group is channels already accepted into YPP.

If Studio lets you apply under the current 1,000-subscriber plus 4,000-hour route, apply as soon as you are eligible. YouTube says review typically takes about one month, but it has not publicly clarified how a still-pending application will be treated on February 1.

01 · THE DEADLINE ANSWER

Does 4,000 hours before February 1 lock in the old rule?

No public YouTube rule says that merely reaching 4,000 hours permanently preserves the old entry threshold. Through January 31, 2027, the full ads and YouTube Premium route is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the relevant window, or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Starting February 1, new applicants face 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days.

Hitting a threshold makes a channel eligible to apply. YouTube still reviews the channel against its monetization policies. The official update explicitly says channels already in YPP are not affected by the new entry threshold. It does not extend that promise to every channel that has only reached the numbers.

03 · CALCULATE THE GAP

Check whether the 4,000-hour route is still realistic

Start with the qualified watch-hour total and subscriber count shown in YouTube Studio's Earn tab. Do not substitute ordinary Analytics watch time. If you need the inclusion rules first, read our guide to what counts toward 4,000 YouTube watch hours.

Use your last 30 days of net qualified-hour change, not just new hours earned. The total uses a rolling window, so older hours can expire while new hours arrive. A straight-line forecast is a planning aid, not an official application result.

04 · ORIGINAL 30-DAY SPRINT CARD

Build a 30-day plan without gaming the metric

  1. 01

    Record one clean baseline

Save today's Earn-tab hours, subscriber count, and the 30-day net change. Write down the date so the next check is comparable.

  2. 02

    Choose one net-hour target

Use the calculator gap to set a 30-day target. If the required pace is far above your recent pace, plan for the 8,000-hour route instead of forcing weak uploads.

  3. 03

Run one retention experiment each week

Change one meaningful variable, such as the opening, structure, topic promise, or follow-up video. Keep public videos useful and policy-compliant.

  4. 04

Refresh the forecast and prepare the application

Recheck the Earn total weekly. Once Studio shows eligibility, stop waiting for a prettier number and start the application.

05 · PREPARE THE APPLICATION

Remove avoidable delays before the threshold appears

  • Open Studio's Earn tab: confirm that both the subscriber and qualified-hour gates are complete.
  • Review the monetization policies: a threshold is not a substitute for original, policy-compliant content.
  • Prepare the account steps: be ready to accept the relevant terms and link an active AdSense for YouTube account when prompted.
  • Keep evidence: save dated screenshots of the Earn tab and application status for your own records.
  • Watch the inbox: respond to YouTube requests instead of assuming silence means approval.

06 · THE PENDING CASE

What if your application is still pending on February 1?

YouTube's public pages do not currently say whether a channel that applied under the old numbers but remains under review on February 1 will be evaluated under the 4,000-hour or 8,000-hour entry threshold. That gap is important. A typical review time of about one month is not a service-level guarantee.

07 · EXISTING YPP MEMBERS

Already in YPP? Your checklist is different

YouTube says channels already in YPP are not moved to the new 8,000-hour or 20-million-view entry thresholds. Existing members should instead accept the updated terms by January 31 to keep associated earnings and prepare for the separate channel activity rules that begin February 1.

Use the YouTube YPP Activity Checker for the published maintenance routes. Missing the updated terms can affect earnings, but YouTube says it does not itself remove a creator from YPP.
